We all make excuses when it comes time for our annual doctor’s appointments. No time, I feel fine, it can wait. But health maintenance is critical to your health. You must make these appointments a priority. Make time now so you can avoid problems later.

Below are some of the typical screenings that you need to put on your calendar. your doctor may do other tests or add screenings depending on your personal health.

WOMEN

20-39 Years:

  • Monthly: Breast self-exam
  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure, Physical, Cholesterol
  • Every 1-2 Years: Pap Smear and pelvic exam
  • Every 2-4 years: Glaucoma (unless diabetic, then annually)
  • Every 3 years: Skin Cancer Screening
  • Every 5 years: Cholesterol
  • Every 10 years: Hearing
  • Eye exam before the age of 40 and
  • Age 35: Thyroid exam and then every 5 years

40-49 Years

  • Monthly: Breast self-exam
  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure, Physical, Blood Lipids, Mammogram
  • Every 1-2 Years: Pap Smear and pelvic exam
  • Every 3 years: Skin Cancer Screening, Blood Sugar
  • Every 5 years: Cholesterol, Thyroid
  • Every 10 years: Hearing
  • Bone Density test at menopause

50-64

  • Monthly: Breast self-exam
  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure, Blood Lipid Levels, Physical, Mammogram
  • Every 1-2 Years: Pap Smear and pelvic exam
  • Every 3 years: Skin Cancer Screening, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol
  • Every 5 years: Thyroid test
  • Every 10 years: Hearing
  • Bone density, Colonoscopy at 50, discuss Hormone Replacement Therapy

65 and Older

  • Monthly: Breast self-exam
  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure, Blood Lipid Levels, Physical, Mammogram
  • Every 1-2 Years: Pap Smear and pelvic exam
  • Every 3 years: Skin Cancer Screening, Blood Sugar, Cholesterol
  • Every 5 years: Thyroid test
  • Every 10 years: Hearing
  • Bone density, Colonoscopy at 50, Stroke screening
Tip: Most women tend to make appointments for the men in their lives so here are the screenings your man needs to get.  No excuses.

20-39 Years:

40-59 Years

  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure
  • Every 2 years: Physical
  • Every 5 years: Cholesterol
  • Every 10 years: Hearing
  • Eye exam as needed
  • Colonoscopy if at high risk

60 and Older

  • Monthly: Skin Self-Exam, Testicular self-exam
  • Twice per year: Dental exam
  • Annually: Blood Pressure, Physical exam, Prostate exam
  • Every 5 years: Cholesterol
  • Every 10 years: Hearing, Colonoscopy (unless at high risk)
  • Eye exam as needed
