SHANNON MILLER HONORED FOR CANCER AWARENESS EFFORTS

WASHINGTON – November 19, 2013- Olympic gold medalist, health advocate, and cancer survivor, Shannon Miller, will receive the Excellence in Cancer Awareness award from the Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program at the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 21st Annual Awards Luncheon on Capitol Hill on November 19, 2013.

The Excellence in Cancer Awareness award honors corporate leaders, athletes and other high profile citizens who demonstrate an indisputable commitment to cancer prevention through education, outreach and awareness.  Shannon’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the health of women and children and her courageous decision to share her personal story while maintaining the grace and positive attitude that the nation has come to associate with her makes her the perfect candidate for this award.

Past recipients of Congressional Families Awards include such notables as Katie Couric, Scott Hamilton, Chef Jose Andres, Dr. Jill Biden, Dara Torres, Dr. Susan Love, Robin Roberts, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Curt and Shonda Schilling, and Jane Seymour.

Shannon stated, “I am so honored to receive this award. Health and wellness for women and children is my passion. As a survivor myself, I understand what patients and families go through during these very difficult times. I want to do everything I can to create awareness and help those that are currently battling this horrific disease.”

The Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program is a network of Congressional, Administration, and Supreme Court spouses committed to reducing cancer incidence through education and prevention.  Each fall, they host an annual awards luncheon to honor individuals in three categories who have made an outstanding contribution to cancer prevention and education.  This bipartisan audience at the invitation-only lunch consists of members of U.S. House of Representatives, Senate and their spouses, as well as leaders in the cancer community and corporate supporters.
