Break the Barriers

Author: Shannon Miller

If exercise is not a part of your weekly routine, but you want it to be, what’s holding you back?  Think positive!

For every barrier that’s standing between you and an active lifestyle, there are multiple solutions.

I’m just too busy! Break this barrier by building physical activity into your daily duties.  You don’t have to be at the gym to get in a work out.  Do some gardening, wash the car, vacuum, mow the lawn (riding mowers don’t count!).  Also, family time may be one reason that you’re too busy to exercise, so make exercising a family affair – go for a walk through the park, go swimming, or play a family softball or basketball game.

I’ve tried treadmills and stationary bikes – they’re boring! Break this barrier by meeting a friend at the gym – you can talk to each other while walking or biking.  Listen to music – get yourself psyched!  Or maybe you just need a change of scenery – rather than walking or biking inside, go outside and smell the roses.

I’m no athlete. You don’t have to be an athlete in order to exercise regularly.  Again, choose an activity that you enjoy.  Also, consider activities that you know you can stick with, like walking.  Go as fast or as slow as you want – as long as you’re moving, you’re doing better than you were when you were sitting on the couch glued to the television.

What barrier will you break this week?  Make it happen!
