The Buddy System

Physical activity may already be a part of your everyday routine – just like eating and sleeping.

But there may be someone in your life that wants to get active yet needs a little extra help and motivation.  Of course, the person has to want your help before she or he will be accepting of it.

So, if the both of you are ready and willing, check out these tips* that will ensure the success of your buddy system!

  • Propose activities that the two of you can do together like taking a walk around the neighborhood or doing some exercise class at the local gym (i.e. Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, Aerobics, etc.).
  • Try to understand why your loved one has a hard time being physically active. Be patient and ask them what you can do to be supportive.
  • Try to be a good role model by staying active and healthy yourself. The best way to teach is by example!
  • Recognize and applaud their efforts, no matter how small. If they start taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, tell them that that’s a great step (no pun intended!) in the right direction.
TIP:  The buddy system is a great way to ensure accountability.  Sometimes people just need someone to lean on!
