Weight Loss – A New Beginning

Author: Shannon Miller

Spring is the season for new beginnings!  What new beginning are you looking for?

Many women, particularly now – right before bathing suit season, decide it’s time to lose some weight.  This isn’t always the easiest feat, but it is achievable.  If you want to make this a priority, it can be!  It’s not only okay, it’s also important, to make yourself a priority.

Check out these helpful hints that, taken together, can be a recipe for success!

Attainable Goals. Start out by setting small goals, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or losing 1 – 2 pounds in a week.

Write it all down! It might be helpful to use a food and exercise journal so you can track when/what/how much you eat, as well as your physical activity.  Check out Shannon Miller’s Food and Exercise Journal – it provides a very easy way to get all of this information together in one easy to use booklet.

Let’s get physical! Work physical activity into your schedule at least 2.5 hours/week.  Remember, you don’t have to get all of your exercise in at one point in the day – do core work when you wake up in the morning, walk for 10 minutes at lunch, do some Yoga poses to wind down before going to bed. What’s cookin’ good lookin’? Maintain a healthy diet.  A few quick tips for doing this include: choosing low fat or fat-free versions of your favorite foods; choosing water or fat-free milk instead of soda or other sugary drinks; when eating out, ask for sauces and dressings on the side. And above all, watch portion sizes. For more healthy diet tips, see this SML article “Ditch the Diet!”.
