3) Get Ready at Home.

Here are some things you’ll need to buy or request as gifts on a registry:

  • Child car safety seat. Make sure it’s installed BEFORE the trip to the hospital. You’ll save yourself a lot of worry that way.
  • Crib. Choose a crib with slats no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. Make sure the crib isn’t painted with lead paint or varnish. Any crib made after 1989 should meet these standards.
  • Diapers. You’ll use about 70 disposable ones a week unless you go the cloth route, which you’ll end up having a lot of washing to do.
  • Layette. You’ll need about 6-8 shirts or onesies, 6-8 sleepers, 4-6 booties or socks, 4-6 receiving blankets, washcloths and towels.
